Quick verdict
Klaviyo is strongest when customer data—not simplicity—is the priority.
Klaviyo is not merely an email broadcasting product. Its core value is the customer data and event layer underneath campaigns: product views, carts, orders, engagement, profile properties and historical behavior can all influence who receives a message, when it is sent and what the message contains.
That makes Klaviyo particularly compelling for ecommerce brands with enough traffic, order data and marketing capacity to use advanced segmentation and lifecycle automation. Welcome, cart, browse, post-purchase, replenishment and win-back journeys can branch according to customer status, order value, product category and predictive signals rather than following one identical path.
The same depth creates the platform's main trade-off. Klaviyo requires better data hygiene, stronger automation design and more ongoing management than a simple newsletter service. A store that only sends a weekly campaign may pay for sophistication it never uses.
Cost also needs careful modeling. Paid Profile + Email plans scale with active profiles and email allowance. Klaviyo defines active profiles broadly enough to include some people created through checkout or engagement who are not subscribed to ordinary newsletters, provided they remain marketable and are not suppressed. The subscribed list count alone is therefore not a reliable budget forecast.
Best for
- Growing Shopify and WooCommerce brands
- Ecommerce teams using behavioral and purchase data
- Businesses that need sophisticated lifecycle flows and segmentation
- Brands combining email with mobile messaging or push notifications
Look elsewhere when
- Creators who mainly need a simple newsletter and digital-product workflow
- Very small businesses that prioritize the lowest possible monthly cost
- Teams that do not have time to design, monitor and improve advanced automations
- Businesses with large numbers of marketable checkout profiles but modest email revenue
Choose Klaviyo when ecommerce data, granular segmentation and sophisticated lifecycle automation can justify the additional cost and operational work. Choose a simpler platform when your marketing program is mainly newsletters, basic forms and a few straightforward automations.
Profile-based pricing
Klaviyo pricing in 2026
Klaviyo separates its free tier, Profile + Email plan, mobile messaging and several optional products. The free plan supports 250 active profiles and 500 monthly email sends. The first paid Profile + Email tier is generally around $20 per month, and pricing rises in steps according to active profiles and the selected email allowance.
Free
Best fit: Testing Klaviyo with a new or very small store
Limits: Up to 250 active profiles and 500 email sends/month
Includes: Core email creation, automations, segmentation, reporting, integrations and $5 of mobile messaging
Watch for: Email support lasts for the first 60 days, Klaviyo branding remains, and sending stops when the free limits are exceeded.
Profile + Email
Best fit: Stores that need paid email volume, branding control and ongoing support
Limits: Price and send allowance scale by active-profile tier; a common allowance is roughly 10 emails per profile
Includes: Paid email capacity, branding removal, email and chat support, campaigns, flows, segmentation and reporting
Watch for: Model the full active-profile database—not only newsletter subscribers—before selecting a tier.
Mobile Messaging
Best fit: Brands adding SMS, MMS, WhatsApp or other supported mobile channels
Limits: Spend is purchased in advance and message rates vary by channel, country, number type and message length
Includes: Mobile messages can be combined with email and push inside campaigns and automated flows
Watch for: Unused monthly messaging dollars do not carry over, and short codes can be billed separately.
Advanced products
Best fit: Larger brands needing deeper data, analytics, reviews, service or enterprise support
Limits: Commercial terms vary by product, profile count and account requirements
Includes: Options include advanced data, marketing analytics, reviews, Customer Hub, Helpdesk and higher-touch support
Watch for: The total Klaviyo stack can cost materially more than the Profile + Email plan shown in simple comparisons.
Klaviyo states that any profile that can be emailed through the platform is active. That can include subscribers as well as people added through checkout or other engagement who have not opted into ordinary campaigns. Suppressed profiles do not count toward the Profile + Email tier. Review, suppress and forecast profiles before choosing a plan; otherwise the bill can rise faster than the visible newsletter list.
Capability assessment
Where Klaviyo earns its premium—and where it adds operational weight.
Ecommerce data and integrations
Klaviyo is built to activate customer and commerce data. Store events, product behavior, orders, profile properties and information from hundreds of integrations can feed campaigns, flows, segments and reporting.
Automation
The flow builder supports email, mobile messaging, push notifications and webhooks. More than 60 pre-built templates, conditional splits, trigger splits and event-level data provide substantial lifecycle depth.
Segmentation
Segments update in real time and can use historical actions without a fixed look-back limit. Predictive signals such as customer lifetime value, churn risk, next order and RFM groupings add meaningful depth for established stores.
Reporting and analytics
Revenue attribution, customizable reports, benchmarks, retention views, real-time monitors and cross-channel data make Klaviyo stronger than platforms designed mainly for newsletter delivery. Attribution settings still require careful interpretation.
Email and form creation
The platform includes editable templates, a drag-and-drop editor, web forms and AI-assisted content tools. Creation is capable, although the surrounding data and workflow options can make the interface feel denser than beginner-first products.
Ease of use
Basic campaigns can be launched without advanced technical knowledge, but extracting Klaviyo's full value requires sound event data, segmentation logic, flow design, testing and regular account maintenance.
Pricing predictability
The free limits are clear, but paid costs depend on active profiles, email volume, mobile-message spend and optional products. Checkout and other marketable profiles can increase the tier even when they are not subscribed to normal campaigns.
Support access
Free users receive email support for the first 60 days and then rely on community and education resources. Paid Profile + Email users receive email and chat support, while higher-touch onboarding and success resources depend on account eligibility.
Trade-offs
Klaviyo pros and cons
Pros
- Deep ecommerce data can connect campaigns and flows to product views, carts, orders, customer value and other behavioral events.
- Real-time segmentation can combine historical actions, profile properties, purchase behavior and predictive signals without a fixed look-back window.
- The flow builder supports conditional and trigger splits, cross-channel actions and more than 60 pre-built automation templates.
- Reporting goes beyond basic opens and clicks with revenue attribution, benchmarks, customizable reports and customer-retention insights.
- The free plan exposes core automation, segmentation and reporting rather than functioning only as a basic broadcast trial.
- A broad integration and API ecosystem makes Klaviyo suitable for stores with a more developed commerce technology stack.
Cons
- Klaviyo is more complex to configure and operate than beginner-focused email platforms.
- Pricing is based on active profiles, and an active profile can include a checkout customer who never opted into ordinary newsletters if the profile remains marketable in Klaviyo.
- The free allowance of 250 active profiles and 500 monthly emails is mainly useful for evaluation or a very small store.
- Profile tiers and email-send limits can create sudden price steps as the database grows.
- Mobile messaging uses a separate spend-based subscription and unused monthly messaging dollars do not roll over.
- Advanced products such as Klaviyo Data Platform, Marketing Analytics, Reviews and service tools can increase the total software bill beyond the email plan.
What we have not tested
Documented capabilities are not the same as independent performance tests.
This review is based on Klaviyo's current official pricing, billing, automation, segmentation and reporting documentation. MailScouter has not yet operated a long-term production Klaviyo account for a client, independently benchmarked inbox placement, measured support response times or compared revenue attribution against a store's source-of-truth analytics.
Those omissions are important. Deliverability depends on authentication, list quality, sending behavior and content. Attributed revenue depends on the configured attribution model and cannot be treated as independently verified profit. Until repeatable hands-on testing is completed, this page does not publish invented deliverability rates or claim that Klaviyo will generate a specific return.

Common questions
Klaviyo FAQ
Is Klaviyo free in 2026?
Yes. The free plan supports up to 250 active profiles, 500 monthly email sends and $5 of mobile messaging each month. It can be used indefinitely while the account remains within those limits.
How does Klaviyo count contacts for billing?
Profile and Email pricing is based on active or billable profiles. An active profile is a profile that can still receive marketing through Klaviyo. This can include subscribed contacts and some checkout or engagement-created profiles that have not been suppressed. Suppressed profiles do not count toward the email billing tier.
Is Klaviyo only for Shopify?
No. Klaviyo supports multiple ecommerce platforms, data sources, APIs and hundreds of integrations. Shopify is a common use case, but the product can also work with WooCommerce and other commerce stacks.
What is Klaviyo's biggest advantage?
Its strongest advantage is the ability to turn detailed customer behavior and purchase data into real-time segments, personalized campaigns, lifecycle flows and revenue-focused reporting.
What is Klaviyo's biggest disadvantage?
The combination of profile-based pricing and product complexity is the main disadvantage. A business can pay for more active profiles than its subscribed newsletter count, and the platform requires more operational discipline than a simple email sender.
Does Klaviyo include SMS?
Klaviyo supports mobile messaging and the free plan includes $5 each month. Paid mobile messaging is purchased separately using a monthly dollar budget, with rates that vary by channel, country, number type and message length.
